Machine perfusion under subnormothermic conditions with an oxygen carrier solution

Dr. Fontes started a new line of investigation at the STI, UPMC which is centered in machine perfusion applied to organ preservation. This project is a multidisciplinary initiative hosted by the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine (MIRM), University of Pittsburgh. The group focused initially in the Liver Failure Therapy Program (LiFT), which has been fully sponsored by an unrestricted charitable grant. A pre-clinical large animal model for liver transplantation was established at the MIRM after an initial consultation with the FDA. This IACUC approved protocol intended to compare cold static preservation with machine perfusion under subnormothermic conditions with full oxygenation and using a new oxygen carrier solution. This study is currently near completion and the data should be presented to the FDA over the summer 2012. The group expects to receive an IDE for this new application and proceed with their first clinical trial over the next months. Additional projects include bioengineered livers, hepatocyte transplantation, biodegradable biliary stents and the development of ex-vivo therapy protocols for cadaveric allografts based on cytokines, growth factors and cell infusions.
